A Visit from Arnold

Hello everyone-
Austin and Arnold As all of you know, my brother Austin, was injured in Fallujah on Nov. 8th. He has been through many surgeries and faces a road of recovery and rehab ahead. He has been in the Bethesda Naval Medical Center in Maryland since Nov. 15th receiving care. My mom and dad drove to Maryland on Nov. 19th, they drove straight through. They were in a bit of a hurry to get to their son :) Well on Thanksgiving, Nov. 25th, Austin and fellow Marines were visited by the Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, his wife, Maria Shriver, her mother (don't know her name, but she was a Kennedy), and Arnold and Maria's children. Pretty cool HUH!! Austin got his autograph and they all shook mom's and dad's hand, they also took a picture of Austin with Arnold.(Which is what I attached.) Mom and dad said that Maria and Arnold kept telling their kids that that these were the real heros. They wanted to come and thank all the Marines who were in the hospital, this was not the first time for them to pay a visit, they do this often. Our REAL HEROS do deserve to know that their sacrifices are never unnoticed. I just wanted to share. Also, OUR HERO (and Arnold's)-AUSTIN, should be returning home Tues. from Maryland. YAH!!!!
Love-

Good Spirits in Iraq

as-salaam sgt grit,
i am sgt david howard, USMC 84-91 from union city, ok and have driven by your warehouse out off of airport road for several years. in august 04, i had to stop in to pick up a NEW k-bar (my old k-bar is perfectly serviceable-but has done its time) for my travels to IRAQ. your staff was Sgt Howard in Iraq courteous and helpful. when a friend of mine (he was a USMC SGT 74-78) was getting ready to join me here, he also went and got a new k-bar....it seems old jarheads still love and prefer k-bars. my father, PFC thomas howard, USMC 44-48 used to talk a lot about his k-bar. well sgt grit, i just wanted to let you know you got a hell of a web site. i have included a pic, there are a bunch of us old marines over here spread throughout the country and a hell of a lot of younger marines doing one hell of a job in fallugah. i had the pleasure to stay a night with some wounded marines & and a grunt corpsman, boy were they in good spirits and typical MARINES..........."WHO's YER BAGHDADDY?"

Generations of Valor

Generations of Valor

AP Photo caption reads: "Pearl Harbor survivor Houston James of Dallas embraced Marine Staff Sgt. Mark Graunke Jr. during a Veterans Day commemoration in Dallas yesterday. Graunke lost a hand, a leg and an eye when he defused a bomb in Iraq last year. This week's images of U.S. troops in combat in Fallujah deepened the day's significance for many who attended tributes held in San Diego and accross the nation.

LCpl Schmidt with his "baby"

LCPL Schmidt and 50 Cal

This picture is of my son, LCPL Gus Schmidt who is deployed in Najaf. This is his 2nd deployment over there and he's proud to be serving his country! He's a gunner on a 7 ton and that 50 cal. is his "baby".

Marine Corps Birthday in Iraq

Thought my Marine brothers might enjoy these photos and accompanying sentiments from an Air Force major. This is a wonderful way for the Marine Corps to celebrate their birthday.

Capt Rodriguez running things Enter the Cake Last Wednesday, the Marine Corps celebrated their 229th birthday. Now, when you've been a Service for 229 years, you have some strong traditions. A ceremony was held in the palace rotunda...a lot of pomp and circumstance; including a band and men's choir. I bleed Air Force blue, but I would be lying if I told you I wasn't a little envious of the traditions of the Corps. It was a great ceremony...with a lot of Honor Guard Posted Post the Colors emotion given that the Marines were fully engaged in Fallujah at the time. I have attached several photos from the ceremony. Sorry that they are blurry, but pictures just don't turn out that well in the palace...I think it's something to do with the reflection that comes from the marble and the lighting.
