Tripoli
Oohrah!
Sgt Grit,
This photo is an "Official" USAF photograph. While stationed at the American Embassy in Tripoli, Libya. We were asked to participate in this ceremony. The ambassador or the deputy chief of Mission, also participated. To the best of my knowledge, this photo was taken during the ceremony honoring the Unknown Soldier, right on the inner harbor on the shores of Tripoli 1964-1966 "Cemetary".
Other than the NCOIC, SSgt in photo, I was Second Senior man in rank, and was given the honor of being the Flag Bearer, for this Memorial Ceremony. I don't recall which holiday it was held on, I think it was either Memorial Day, 4th of July, or Veterans Day. I think the most unique thing of this photo is the part of the Marine Hymn, to the "Shores of Tripoli". It would appear only a small percentage of Marines, can claim having been on the "Shores of Tripoli"!

Mardi Gras Marines
Hello everyone,
I went to a Mardi Gras parade in Slidell La. Jan 9th and in the parade there
was a Marine marching band and they looked great. I was so happy to see
them in the parade. The Marines looked so sharp and all had their
uniforms so sharp and straight. The Marines were all in sequence and in
time. They really did a great job representing the Marines and all that
they stand for. I was so proud to see them. I just wanted to say
Thank you for being in the parade and Thanks for all that the Marines do
for all of us. Thank you to all the Marines everywhere and I am proud
of each and everyone of you. May God bless each and everyone of you.
Sincerely, Richard

Boot Camp Prayer
Dear Sgt Grit:
Attached is a picture I took of my son the day he graduated from Boot Camp in San Diego, CA. It was November 27, 2004 and it was the proudest day of my life. This picture was taken after he had graduated and introduced us to his Drill Instructors. After we all started winding down, I saw the flag waving in the breeze and thought it would make a good picture with my son. He wanted to say a quick prayer and I could not pass up the opportunity to take the picture. It came out much better than I had anticipated.
I would very much like to pass this on to everyone else because I am so proud of my son.
Thank you Sgt Grit for having your web site and news letter.

Scared of Marines?
I was going through some old WWII stuff for my grandson and thought you might get a kick out of this.
..."when his wife, Mignon, joined the Marines a year ago, he wrote to her: 'That does it, I wouldn't dare live with a Marine'"...

Toys 4 Tots
Sgt. Grit:
I am a former Marine lieutenant, my son is currently a Major, and I
am honored to convey this wonderful story about the local Oklahoma City
"Jag" Club donating to Toys for Tots. I am a friend of one of their
members, Mr. Harry Frantz. I have kept Harry informed about the good
things our Marines are doing in Iraq and Afghanistan for some time, and have
educated him from time to time about our unique and special history and
ethos. Unbeknownst to me, Harry went to his local "Jag" Club after I told
him about Toys for Tots, and the photos below speak for themselves.

A Quiet Hero
I would like to discuss A Quiet Hero!
I paid a visit a few weeks back to someone whom we all know but seldom hear anything about in the media chaff which so intrudes in our lives.
This was my third visit to see the gentleman- and he was definitely an officer and gentleman. He's not much for talk but his place of abode takes the need to talk away anyway. I said my usual few words of greeting and salutation and told him how he had always been an inspiration to jarheads like me and that he held the dubious honor of being the first Marine to address the Muslim Terrorist Threat. He did it with a flourish, with only seven Marines and a ragtag group of Tripoli natives and saved a bunch of squids while he was at it. His act of heroism added a word to our history and our Anthem as well as a hilt to a sword- the word is "Tripoli". The country he defeated in battle is now known as Libya.
You guessed it - I was in the Kentucky State Capitol - Frankfort, KY and visited the final resting place of Lt. Presley O'Bannon in the Frankfort Cemetary. It is a beautiful place and a fitting resting place for a real Marine hero who seemingly is never mentioned in today's media or history books. When the whole world was terrorized and shipping was at a virtual standstill in the Mediterranean, this Marine set the precedent for sandbox play which our brothers are mastering again today. Presley lived a good life and a long life and died in 1850. His deed which will live forever took place in 1805 and he was the first US Military Officer to set foot on foreign soil and plant the flag on campaign.
This was the first Marine Corps expeditionary venture. We all know the history if we are Marines but the public certainly doesn't.
Lieutenant O'Bannon is buried not 50 yards from the Kentucky State War Memorial (he was there first ) and only abut 150 yards from the grave of another of my heroes and yours- Daniel Boone. Both of these outstanding individuals were moved here to their final resting place overlooking the beautiful Kentucky River in the early part of this century.
Boone from his last home in Missouri and O'Bannon from his home in Logan County, KY. His memorial, with its large, red, Eagle, Globe and Anchor Marker is easy to spot as you drive into the cemetery towards the War Memorial (which in itself is memorable and well done). I have visited Daniel Boone at least a dozen times before but only in the last three or four years did I discover my quiet hero - Presley O'Bannon - Lieutenant, I salute you and thank you. I can't imagine a more perfect resting place for you.

Marines Take Care of Marines
Away from the war for a moment and bringing it home.
Thought you might enjoy seeing the Get Well card sent from the Texas Chapter of the Leathernecks Motorcycle Club International to Deanna Neal who lost her leg in a MC accident in Va. Her husband Tom is the Marine and after hearing of the incident the Lone Star Devil Dogs sent this. Marines do it right. Semper Fi

Marine Reserve Band
Dear Sgt Grit
We saw the Marine Reserve Band from New Orleans last Sat night 3 july at Atchison Kansas. The concert was excellent with a big crowd attending. There was a several minute standin ovation for them at the conclusion. They made me feel very proud of my time in the corps.
Thanks Dale 1607484

General Black Jack Pershing
They don't make them like this anymore
When we lost Chesty Puller, that was the "LAST OF THE BREED" who had enough "BALLS" to do something like this in today's "POLITICALLY CORRECT MILITARY"!!!!!
It's really discouraging to know that we don't have any more like these guys!!!!
God save the United States....The politicians are tearing us apart!!!!!

Sgt Maj Dan Daley - Cypress Hills National Cemetary
I wanted to share this picture of Sgt Maj Dan Daley, he is buried in Cypress Hills National Cemetary, Brooklyn, NY. When I visited his grave, it was overgrown with weeds and the headstone was unreadable to to weathering and dirt. We cleaned it up with soap and water, cut the grass around the grave, and placed two Sgt Maj chevrons on either side of his name, which unfortunately I can not find at the moment. Sgt Maj Daley, is a relative on my mothers side of the family, and from the stories about him, I can tell you he was all Marine and very gung ho. I was told he worked as a bank guard after his retirement, and apprehended a bank robber single handedly, which after his past exploits in the Marines is hardly worth mentioning here, but thought you should know.
